Digital Humanities Day

Aug 10, 2023 10:00 AM to 04:00 PM

Registration Deadline: Aug 9, 2023 01:00 PM

Digital Humanities Day will build skills in computational thinking to give you a head-start for future Digital Humanities workshops, classes, or projects. The day will include a jargon busting activity, hands-on learning about regular expressions and working with files from the command line, a session on 3D printing for the Humanities, and a discussion about building a Digital Humanities community of practice at Mount Allison.

Skills:
·      Regular expressions for pattern matching in text
·      Navigating your filesystem using the Unix shell
·      Working with files and directories
·      Automating tedious tasks with loops
·      Counting and mining with the shell
·      Working with free text

Technology notes:
Bring your own laptop! (Or let us know if you don't have one and we'll find one for you.)
To participate in this workshop, you will need access to a working Unix-like shell environment. We will be using Bash (Bourne Again Shell) which is standard on macOS. Participants with Windows computers will need to install Git for Windows. Online assistance will be provided to help with setup.

Masks will be mandatory in the classroom.
